Open Tryouts
HP Soccer Academy hosts an annual Open Tryout Event in May each year for all players, prospective and current, who want to play the following year. The tryout event kicks off an evaluation period, and after the tryout event, players are invited to attend team practices. At the tryout event and subsequent team practices, players are evaluated as they practice with players their own age. For Academy ages, player’s attendance, participation, sportsmanship will set expectations for skill development required, which team they make and playing time. After the evaluation period is complete, the first round of Academy-aged players (born between 2019-2016) will be notified by the end of May. Select players (born in 2015 or later) will be notified on July 1.
Attendance
Attendance is a critical evaluation criteria and a major item for families to consider before joining HPSA. Teams require 100% participation, so if families already know that their schedule cannot accommodate this level of commitment, we ask you to hold off joining until it does. Our teams want to be competitive, and we all work hard to ensure that they are. Player attendance to practices and games is something we cannot stress enough. We practice twice a week and play in league games or tournaments year round, meaning we practice January-December and participate in games each calendar season. While we are closed when HPISD is closed, some leagues continue to hold games during holiday vacations. It is important to ask coaches and team managers about the team’s calendar year of events to know whether your team will possibly have games during Winter and Spring Breaks.
What to Expect at Tryouts
New Players. Players trying out will be met at Open Practice by a Team Manager or Coach.
Current Players register each season by attending Open Tryouts and attending the practices afterward, but they are evaluated throughout the season on teamwork, sportsmanship, attendance, effort, persistence and development . By not participating in Open Tryouts and subsequent practices, current players indicate that they will not return to HP Soccer Academy for the upcoming season. However, current players are still required to continue attending practices, games and tournaments for the current season.
Parents. When attending a tryout, plan to arrive at least 10 minutes early. Parents may watch the tryout, but they are not allowed on the field. Siblings are also not permitted on the field or in any other areas wherein the practice is taking place. Parents may be asked to leave if siblings become a distraction to the coach or players. All team selections are made by HPSA coaches.
For the tryout itself, areas on the field will be divided by teams and/or birth year. Players will participate in a team practice with HPSA coaches. Current and new players will practice together. Current players will wear their white HPSA jersey, and new players will receive a pinnie with a number for tracking purposes. New players are to wear the pinnie to all following practices until they join and receive a practice uniform. For younger ages, tryouts might be overwhelming, and we understand. That is why we host them multiple times in team practices so coaches can see them multiplie times and for them to understand the pace of practices as well as the attendance commitment that will be required if they join.
Preparing for Tryouts
HPSA offers and encourages participation in Futsal and Friday Skills Training to current and non-HPSA players who want to improve their skills to prepare for tryouts.
Unable to Attend?
For those unable to attend the tryout event or practices in May, depending on team space available, HPSA will host open practices during the summer, beginning in mid-June. Official dates and times are TBA.
Invite Friends
If you invite friends, please inform them that they must complete the registration form on our homepage prior to attending a tryout or practice. The online registration form allows players to attend future events and receive club communications. You only need to complete the registration form once per player to be registered with the club.
